Getting to Know Canvas and Paint

2007–2008

Thirty years ago, I started playing around with pastels. I created still lifes, and later, designed two collections of recipe postcards that I sold all over New England. I worked on landscapes, too, illustrating a column for Down East Magazine for a while.

Eventually, I started a family, got a ‘real job’ and put away my art supplies. Fifteen years passed and I began longing to return to art. When my second child entered high school, I quit my job to jump back in. We had moved in the interim, and somehow, I had lost all of my pastels.

Just as strange, I discovered a box of acrylic paints and brushes, so I decided I would learn to use them. I kept my subject matter simple, to allow me to focus on learning to mix paint and use a brush. My studio was a small table by the woodstove.

I hope you enjoy the brightness and innocence of my first paintings.
